Bartolomé Rodríguez Palma, un clérigo minero portugués en Nueva Galicia, 1676-1698

Abstract

Este artículo analiza la historia de un clérigo portugués que en el último tercio del siglo XVII se convirtió en el minero más importante de la región de Guadalajara. Plantea la hipótesis de que el éxito económico que alcanzó lo enfocó en establecer sólidos lazos afectivos con poderosos personajes y realizar costosas obras filantrópicas para mantener alejado el estigma de portugués-judaizante para él, sus familiares y algunos paisanos.

The following article analyzes the history of a Portuguese cleric who, for the last third part of the xvii century, became the most important miner in the region of Guadalajara. This research hypothesizes that his economic success was channeled towards the establishment of social relations with influential figures and towards investment in philanthropic work, all this in order to protect his family and himself of the stigmatization of Portuguese-Jew.
