El archivo, la monja y el problema de la violación de guerra en la revolución mexicana, 1914

Abstract

Este artículo tiene dos propósitos: el primero es explicar cómo la conformación de un archivo histórico es un acto de poder mediatizado por las relaciones de género, y el segundo, hacer visible a un grupo de mujeres cuya historia ha permanecido sin identificarse en la historiografía mexicana. Ambos hilos de esta historia se remontan a la década de la Revolución mexicana, en particular al año de 1914. Se trata de una historia doblemente invisibilizada: por ser una historia de mujeres y por ser una historia de religiosas. El eje rector del argumento es el testimonio sobre la violación de algunas de estas mujeres por los soldados del Ejército constitucionalista. Se interpreta a través del lente analítico de la subalternidad con el objetivo de resaltar las diferencias entre lo sagrado y lo profano, la pureza y la contaminación. Esta lectura estratégica de las fuentes nos abre ventanas sobre la historia de la revolución como guerra, y la violencia como un fenómeno sexuado.

This article has two goals: first, to show how the construction of historical archives is a gendered act of power; and second, to render visible a group of women whose lives have remained previously marginalized in Mexican historiography. Both threads of this story are situated in 1914 at an inflection point of the Mexican revolution. This is a doubly invisible history, once because it is a history of women, and again due to their religious vows. The topic that guides the argument is the testimony produced around the rape of some religious women at the hands of Constitutionalist Army soldiers. It is read in multiple ways through the lens of the subaltern, and teases out the differences between the sa and the profane, purity and contamination. This strategic reading of the sources opens distinct but related windows on the history of revolution as war, and violence as a sexed phenomenon.
